Asperger's Syndrome Children's Book:
TAP DANCING in the Night
The Asperger's Syndrome (AS) children's book, TAP DANCING in the night,
also covering High Functioning
Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorder, is the first to be presented in an interactive CD-ROM format! Aspies
(people with AS, High Functioning Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorders) from all over the
world via the Internet inspired TAP DANCING in the night. Participants shared their interests, talents and
challenges with author Martha Kate Downey, who compiled them into a magnificent collection of stories, poems and
art…truly a celebration of people with Asperger's.
The Aspie name itself was coined by a group of adults who have AS. They wanted a way to refer
to themselves in a positive way. Thus the word Aspie is often used as a pet name in the community of those with
AS. In this book it also refers to those sharing many AS characteristics of a person such as,
those having High Functioning Autism, or other Pervasive Developmental Disorders.
Included in the book is the List of Characteristics that an Aspie might have. It has remained as public domain
so that you may run off as many copies as you like to share with teachers, neighbors, family members, etc. It is
also especially helpful to use as a checklist to mark the characteristics that were seen when the person was younger
as well as the current characteristics your Aspie might have. Doctors find it is especially helpful when meeting
and treating an Aspie that is no longer quite small and has begun to learn techniques or replace past characteristics
with new behaviors no longer seen as those of a person with autism.
TAP DANCING in the night is generally recommended for readers aged 7-16, but
even adults with AS will find validation and inspiration on virtually every page. Parents,
teachers and siblings will benefit from the book’s unique insight—helping them better understand
the Aspies in their lives.
