Sources for Respite Funding (Revised):

Children’s Services*

Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services – Community Care Services (formerly TDHS):

Community Living Assistance and Support Services (CLASS) Program: Provides home and community-based services as a cost-effective alternative to placement in an institution. Primary diagnosis must be a disability other than mental retardation, with onset occurring before age 22. Call 1-877-438-5658 for the state interest list; 817-536-8693 or 817-332-7171 for more information from local providers.

In-Home and Family Support – TDHS: Provides grant benefits through Texas Department of Human Services for individuals with physical disabilities ages 4 or older. Call 1-877-236-6500.
The Medically Dependent Children Program (MDCP): Provides home support for medically involved children under 21. Children must meet criteria for admission into a nursing home.

Primary Home Care: Personal care provided by an attendant for adults & children whose health problems cause them to be functionally limited in performing activities of daily living – In Tarrant Co. 817-321-8000.

Texas Department of Aging & Disability Services – Mental Retardation Community Services (formerly TDMHMR):

Home & Community-based Services (HCS, formerly MRLA): Provides home and community-based services to individuals with mental retardation as an alternative to institutional living. Call your local Mental Retardation Authority for access to the waiting list. In Tarrant County call 817-569-4140.
In-Home and Family Support – MR: Provides small grants of money to pay for certain disability related items or services. Individuals with mental retardation or autism are eligible. Call 817-569-4014 for an application.
MR General Revenue Service Coordination: Among other services, can provide a designated amount of respite both in the individual’s home and away from home. Call 817-569-4000.

Texas Department of Aging & Disability Services – Aging Services

Area Agency on Aging: A resource for respite funding for older relatives (usually grandparents) who care for children. In Tarrant County call 2-1-1.

Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services –

Early Childhood Intervention (ECI): Provides in-home services for children with developmental delays under age 3. Call 817-446-8000.

Blind & Visually Impaired Services (Children’s Program) – 1-800-252-5204

Texas Department of State Health Services (formerly TDH):

Children with Special Health Care Needs – 1-800-252-8023

Cancer Care Services – Respite services for low-income Tarrant County patients with cancer – 817-921-0653.

Non-Education Funding: Speak with your child’s school district or regional education service center about this limited funding option. For more information, refer to the Texas Education Code (S.B. 1, Sec. 29.013) or visit the Region XI website @ www.esc11.net. On the menu, go to Staff and Services and then choose Services. Click on the VIEW button for Non-Educational Community Based Support Services Funding and you will find information and guidelines for funding for Region XI.

Extended School Year Services (ESY): Speak with your child’s school district. ESY is needed whenever a student would experience unacceptable regression over the summer months. Respite care for parents is a factor considered in this program. For more information

Adult Services*

Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services – Community Care Services (formerly TDHS):

Community Based Alternatives (CBA): Provides home and community-based services for older adults and adults with disabilities. If a young adult is nearing 21, his or her name should be placed on the Community Care Interest List.
Respite Care Program: Provides 336 hours (14 days) of respite per year for adults 18 or older. The individual must be a Medicaid recipient or be determined financially eligible.
In-Home and Family Support: Provides grant benefits to individuals with physical disabilities 4 yrs or older.
Primary Home Care: Personal care provided by an attendant for adults & children whose health problems cause them to be functionally limited in performing activities of daily living.

Deaf-Blind Multiple Disabilities Program: Provides services for individuals 18 or older who are both deaf and blind and have a need for 24-hour support. Call 1-877-438-5658 or 1-512-438-2622
